Before Lewis and Clark there was William Bartram. In March 1774, Bartram began his much-anticipated trip to Florida, first setting foot on Amelia Island. He documented the region’s flora and fauna, and introduced the world to over 250 native plants. To preserve the legacy of William Bartram and celebrate the 247th Anniversary, Amelia Island Kayak Excursions will guide a kayak tour focusing on the history and flora and fauna of Egan's Creek and the area. Following the kayak tour, we will host the Bartram Trail Conference. They will bring history to life in a reenactment of the naturalist using Bartram’s words and illustrations. This event is great for history buffs, naturalists, gardeners, hikers, bikers, paddlers and others who might benefit from the recreational trails and botanical gardens along Bartram’s route. On this guided kayak tour, guests will experience gliding through the naturally carved paths of the marsh grasses in the estuary, while having a view of the historic Amelia Island Lighthouse. They can enjoy seeing the various aquatic vegetation while keeping an eye out for birds and other wildlife that nature has to offer in our area. This environment also gives paddlers great views of marsh grasslands and an ever-changing skyline that are hard to beat. As a keepsake of the time on the water, there will be a complimentary group digital photo memory album. A fun outing for all experience levels. *Reservations required. Call 904-557-5307 or Book Online. Directions provided at time of reservation. AIKE is a Bartram Trail Conference Affiliate.
